HUGH ‘SHUGGY’ O’DONNELL
Hugh “Shuggy” O’Donnell’s connection to the O’Neill family began long before George and Áine arrived in Donegal. He first met Colm O’Neill during the Troubles, in the early days of their involvement in the Republican movement in South Armagh. Shuggy was young, angry and convinced that nothing could touch them. Colm possessed the same passion, but his purpose ran deeper. He believed they were fighting not only for Ireland’s future, but for its memory, its history and the stories that had shaped its people.
Colm’s ability to connect politics with history left a lasting impression on Shuggy. He spoke of Ireland’s revolutionary figures, its ancient past and the importance of protecting a cultural inheritance that could easily be forgotten or deliberately buried. Although their lives eventually followed different paths, Shuggy never forgot what Colm stood for. His loyalty remained, even after Colm was gone.
That loyalty brings Shuggy into George and Áine’s journey in The Donegal Cipher. As Colm’s notes lead the group into a mystery stretching across Donegal, Mullaghmore, the Isle of Man and Tory Island, Shuggy becomes their connection to the people and places operating beyond the usual channels. Through him, Áine also begins to understand another side of her father: the younger Colm, the cause he once served and the history he spent his life trying to protect.

The real Shuggy and the fictional Hugh "Shuggy" O'Donnell share more than a nickname. While the man behind the character was born and raised in Scotland before moving to Canada in 1990, his family roots trace back to County Donegal. That shared heritage became the inspiration for transforming him into the Donegal-born character readers meet throughout the George Ryan series.
After arriving in Canada, Shuggy built a life defined by hard work, craftsmanship, and a willingness to embrace every opportunity. His journey has taken him from construction sites to the fairways as a professional golfer and instructor before eventually opening his own hardwood flooring businesses. A gifted craftsman, he also spent years creating custom live-edge furniture, combining patience, precision, and an appreciation for natural beauty.
Away from work, Shuggy is happiest on a golf course, cheering on his favourite football club, experimenting in the kitchen, or planning his next adventure. His greatest pride, however, is his daughter, Paige Madison, whose passion for music and theatre keeps life exciting and full of new experiences.
Like the character he inspired, Shuggy is outgoing, fiercely loyal, and happiest surrounded by friends.
