Whether she is untangling the meaning hidden within an ancient language or capturing a fleeting detail through her camera, she brings clarity to the mysteries surrounding George, Áine and Jazz. Her photographs preserve the evidence, while her knowledge of linguistics helps reveal the stories it has been waiting to tell.
A LIFE OBSERVED
Irene Dobson is a professor of linguistics at the University of Toronto, where she and Jasminder “Jazz” Grewal were colleagues long before they became a couple. While Jazz studies what civilizations leave buried in the ground, Irene searches for meaning in the languages, symbols and stories they leave behind. Her expertise makes her a natural addition to the group, but it is her sharp eye, quiet confidence and ability to recognize overlooked details that quickly make her indispensable.
Irene steps fully into the adventure in The Atlantis Enigma, joining Jazz in Lahinch during an archaeological conference on Ireland’s Atlantic coast. What begins as an academic gathering soon carries them across the Aran Islands and into a mystery involving an unusual artefact, ancient traditions and the possibility that Ireland’s legends preserve fragments of something real. Irene approaches the evidence as both a linguist and a photographer. Her knowledge helps uncover meaning within inscriptions and inherited stories, while her camera captures details that might otherwise be lost.
Her relationship with Jazz grows naturally from the respect already established between them. They are intellectual equals, each approaching the past from a different direction. Jazz reads the physical evidence, while Irene listens to the language surrounding it. Their differences complement one another, but Irene is never simply Jazz’s companion. She questions assumptions, offers her own interpretations and remains composed when their academic curiosity leads them into danger.
By The Donegal Cipher and The Tofino Deception, Irene has become an established member of the group and a trusted friend to George and Áine. Her relationship with Jazz has developed into a settled partnership built on affection, shared curiosity and the adventures they never quite intend to find. In The Orkney Reliquary, her place within this extended family is unmistakable when she stands beside Áine as maid of honour at Brandon House. Irene may have entered the story through Jazz, but she has long since earned a place, and a story, entirely her own.

Irene and Jazz, In Her Own Words
Jazz and I were colleagues before we were anything else. At the University of Toronto, our work often brought us into the same conversations, even if we approached the past from different directions. He studied what people left behind in the earth. I studied what survived in their languages, symbols and stories. I admired his intelligence immediately, but it was his curiosity that drew me closer. Jazz never treated history as something settled. Every answer only seemed to give him another question.
Our relationship changed during the events of The Atlantis Enigma. What began as an academic conference in Lahinch became something far more dangerous, carrying us from the lecture halls to the Aran Islands in search of the truth behind an extraordinary discovery. Working beside Jazz allowed me to see the man beyond the professor. He was thoughtful, loyal and brave, although his enthusiasm could occasionally lead us somewhere sensible people would have avoided.
By the time we travelled through Donegal and later crossed Vancouver Island in the Winnebago, we had found our own rhythm. Jazz reads the physical evidence, while I look for meaning in the words, images and details surrounding it. We do not always agree, but that is part of what makes us work. He challenges my interpretations, I question his assumptions, and somewhere between us the larger story begins to emerge.
What we share has never been built on grand gestures. It grew through conversations, discoveries, long journeys and the quiet moments between one mystery and the next. Jazz brought me into George and Áine’s remarkable world, but they soon became my friends as well. Standing beside Áine as her maid of honour at Brandon House felt like recognition of how far all of us had travelled together.
With Jazz, life is rarely predictable. There is always another artefact, another forgotten story or another journey waiting just beyond the horizon. I may sometimes remind him to slow down and examine what is directly in front of him, but the truth is that I would not want him to stop looking. His curiosity is part of who he is, and somewhere along the way, following it became part of my story too.
