DAVID SIMMS
David Simms is a skilled mariner, diver and mechanic whose calm judgement and knowledge of Vancouver Island’s dangerous waters prove vital to the investigation.
DAVID SIMMS
Born in Camden, London, David Simms came to Vancouver Island roughly ten years before the events of The Tofino Deception while working on a marine research contract. What began as a temporary assignment became a permanent life after he met George’s sister, Fiona. The couple settled in Campbell River, where their home overlooks Discovery Passage and the complex network of islands, channels and powerful currents that now define their lives.
David runs dive training, underwater safety and coastal rescue courses. His knowledge is practical and hard-earned, built through years spent working around boats, divers and some of British Columbia’s most unpredictable waters. He understands tide tables, marine charts and the dangers of Seymour Narrows better than most. He is also a gifted mechanic, capable of rebuilding engines, repairing marine systems and returning neglected vessels to the water. His largest project is a rescued 2005 Leopard 45 catamaran that he patiently restores after finding it abandoned and badly damaged.
MORE THAN A BROTHER-IN-LAW
When George, Áine, Jazz and Irene bring the Tidecore investigation to Campbell River, David quickly becomes an essential member of the group. He provides them with a base at Browns Bay, contributes his marine knowledge and makes the Leopard available for their work on Discovery Passage. As the investigation moves onto the water, David takes the helm, guiding the catamaran through Seymour Narrows and keeping the team alive when the currents become dangerously unstable. His experience later makes him valuable to the official investigation, where he helps authorities understand how Tidecore’s equipment was deployed in such hazardous waters.
Warm, practical and quietly courageous, David balances the seriousness of his work with an easy sense of humour. He welcomes George’s friends as family and remains calm when others begin to panic. He is also a devoted Arsenal supporter, a loyalty inherited from his Camden upbringing and displayed proudly throughout his home. Beneath the football banter is a dependable man whose skills, judgement and knowledge of the coast prove vital to uncovering the truth behind The Tofino Deception.
