BÁDÓIRÍ NA HOILEÁIN

ISLAND SURFERS, DINGLE

Decorative gold ornament with symmetrical scrollwork and a diamond shape in the center, placed against a gradient background from dark gray to light gray.

BÁDÓIRÍ NA HOILEÁIN, or ISLAND SURFERS, is Áine O’Neill’s independent surf shop in Dingle. More than a place to buy or rent equipment, it reflects her practical nature and deep connection to the Atlantic. The shop provides boards, wetsuits and secure surf lockers for locals and visitors exploring the rugged coastline of the Dingle Peninsula. It is also a meeting place for the area’s surfing community, built around Áine’s knowledge of the sea and respect for those who venture into it.

George first enters the shop looking for somewhere safe to store his surfboard while construction is underway at his new property. Áine immediately recognizes him as an experienced surfer and begins calling him Seoirse (pronounce SOAR-sha) , the Irish form of George and the name he was given at birth. By using it, she quietly reconnects him with his Irish heritage and makes it clear that, in Dingle, he is no longer simply a visitor. Their first conversation marks the beginning of a friendship that soon grows into something far more important.

THE O’NEILL LEGACY

A decorative gold cross with ornate designs on a black background with colorful neon light streaks.

The O’Neill family’s connection to Dingle reaches back through generations of Irish Republican history. Áine’s father, Colm O’Neill, is a Sinn Féin representative elected to Dáil Éireann and a proud advocate for Irish unity. Before the Good Friday Agreement opened a path toward political change, he was active within the Republican movement and formed relationships during the Troubles that he has never entirely left behind. Although his work is now conducted through parliament, those old loyalties and connections remain part of the family’s influence.

Áine’s brother, Éamonn, operates outside the public world of politics. Fiercely protective of his sister, he maintains an extensive network of trusted contacts throughout Dingle and beyond, including people within law enforcement and former Republican circles. When George, Jazz and Áine encounter dangers the authorities cannot easily address, Éamonn is often the person capable of finding information, protection or allies. For Áine, the O’Neill legacy is not simply family history. It is a responsibility built upon loyalty, community and the belief that some things are worth defending.
